A Balanced Approach to Literacy Development in the Early Years (13.11.17)

Central Hotel, Tullamore

For 2016-2017 NEPS and the Association of Teachers’/  Education Centres in Ireland have embarked on an exciting collaboration to provide training courses for teachers who would like to develop their practice in the teaching of literacy skills in the Early Years.

As part of the National Literacy Strategy, NEPS have developed a new on-line resource for use by teachers in Irish primary schools.

The Balanced Approach to Literacy Development in the Early Years draws on international research, evidence based practice and samples of that practice in Irish primary schools to give a coherent and comprehensive guide to teachers. It is also aligned with the new Primary Language Curriculum.

This is a resource that can be used by class teachers working with children from Junior Infants to First Class. It may also be helpful to schools who have identified the need to improve reading standards as part of the school-self-evaluation process.   Some schools may also like to use the resource to support the work of a professional learning community focusing on literacy.

This resource contains:

     Suggestions for developing practice

     Supporting resources and materials

32 short video clips of best practice in action showing teachers and children in Irish classrooms

Summary of research evidence practice in action

This seminar, presented by members of the Inspectorate, is for post-primary school leaders involved in leading SSE in their schools (principals, deputy principals and others involved in leading the process). It focuses on the use of Looking at Our School 2016 to support and inform the SSE process, and will provide an opportunity for participants to discuss and reflect on their school’s progress with SSE to date, and where they would like the process to bring them into the future.

Schools may nominate up to three people to attend; however, these numbers may have to be limited depending on demand.

PDST Primary Child Protection Seminar

Laois Education Centre

Primary Child Protection Seminars – Autumn 2017

As you are aware, the Department of Education and Skills issued Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post Primary Schools in September 2011 (See Circular 00065/2011). All newly appointed Designated Liaison Persons (DLP) and Deputy Designated Liaison Persons (DDLP) are advised to attend child protection training in order to be clear about their role, and in order to ensure that all staff members understand their responsibilities under the Child Protection Procedures.

Please note that the Child Protection Procedures for Primary and Post Primary Schools referenced above along with the underpinning guidelines ‘Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children’, are currently being revised. The PDST therefore is also required to update its range of supports for schools in line with the revised procedures and new guidelines. Consequently we will be offering this in-service for the revised versions in Term 2 2018.

In the meantime however, due to demand from newly appointed DLPs and DDLPs for immediate training this term, the PDST is providing a one-day training course for newly appointed DLPs and DDLPs. Schools should note that this training will be based on Circular 0065/2011 (i.e. existing guidelines) which will be replaced by the revised versions accompanied by training in Term 2, 2018. We will keep you updated regarding this in-service which will become available to all schools in Term 2.
Places for the seminar this term (based on existing guidelines), is strictly reserved for newly appointed DLPs and DDLPs only.

The Department of Education and Skills will facilitate substitute cover where necessary.
The date for your local education centre is as follows:

Venue: Laois Education Centre
Date 17th November 2017 (9.30am-3.30pm)
Please log on to http://www.pdst.ie/onlinebooking  to register for this seminar.
You may wish to look at the child protection section of our website at www.pdst.ie/childprotection. It contains relevant documentation as well as presentations which you may find useful for sharing with staff or parents. We request that you bring your own copy of the Child Protection procedures to the training day. These are available on www.pdst.ie/childprotection.
