Primary Schools Leaders (Laois Education Support Centre Catchment Area only): Review of School Admissions Law and Procedures 1.10.24

This seminar is open to school leaders in Primary and Special Schools in Laois Education Support Centre's catchment area only.

The seminar will cover the following points from a legal perspective (in relation to both special and mainstream education):

Review of School Admissions Law and Procedures

• Statutory requirements for Admissions Policy and Admissions Notice.
• Applications procedure, timelines and decision making processes
• Admissions considerations for special classes/units.
• Selection criteria in the event of over-subscription.
• Communicating with parents about refusal to enrol, reasons for refusal and wait-listing options.
• Board reviews and section 29 appeals.
• Information sharing and co-operation between schools.

- There is a €10 non-refundable course fee.

It will be led by Brian Matthews BA, MA, BCL - Brian is a Partner in Millett & Matthews Solicitors, working in education law, employment law, child protection, and litigation. Brian provides advice, training and support to schools in areas ranging from admissions and employment matters through to discipline issues and child protection. He also works with Patron bodies, School Trustees and management bodies to assist them in discharging their statutory functions in relation to issues including school mergers, closures and establishment as well as employment, child protection, charity regulation and ethos issues. He has wide experience in contentious matters in a variety of different legal fora including Section 29 Appeal hearings, the Workplace Relations Commission, the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court as well in the European Court of Justice (CJEU).
