The Edmark Reading Programme in the AEN/SEN context (Face-to-face in Laois Ed Centre) 6.10.2025Laois Education Support Centre This face-to-face course in Laois Education Support Centre will provide an overview of the Edmark Reading Programme, which is designed to support literacy development for children with additional needs. This programme is particularly suited to children with Autism or those with a strong visual memory. There is evidence that Edmark can be helpful for Gestalt Language Processors and those with potential for hyperlexia. This is an updated version of courses previously offered by Laois and Kildare Education Centres. The course will cover the resources and teaching approaches of Edmark, as well as assessment, planning, and how Edmark can be used in an AEN/SEN setting. Course participants will be given an opportunity to examine the content of the Edmark kit and will receive access to a bank of interactive online games linked directly to the word lists for Edmark level 1. The course will also provide a brief overview of Gestalt Language Processing and its potential role in literacy development, particularly in the context of scientific research into how reading develops in the brain. Please note that research into literacy development in Gestalt Language Processors is currently limited so the information provided is based on anecdotal evidence in the education and speech and language communities. Facilitator Nicola O’Lone has had many years experience in SET at various class levels throughout her 2 decades of teaching and is currently in her second year teaching in an autism class in Scoil na Naomh Uilig. She has used Edmark extensively in recent years and supported colleagues in its use. Nicola is passionate about inclusive, neurodiversity affirming practice and has done extensive professional development in the areas of literacy and AEN, which she has brought to her own teaching practice. |

Programme of Support/Clár Tacaíochta for Administrative Principals Option 1: 7.10.25Laois Education Support Centre Programme of Support/Clár Tacaíochta for Administrative Principals for schools in our catchment area for the school year 2025/2026. We are very aware of the many challenges and demands that principals face, due to societal changes and the constantly evolving nature of the role. With this in mind, we are inviting you to join us for this programme. It will be a participant-led programme that will be responsive to the individual needs of those who attend. It is envisaged that each group will be limited in number in order to create a safe and comfortable space for all who attend. Places will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. We will be offering specific sessions for Teaching Principals and Administrative Principals, as was the case last year. Paudie O’Neill, a skilled facilitator with a strong background as a Primary Principal and many years’ experience as a facilitator will work with us again this year, offering two get-togethers (9.30am-2.30pm) for principals over the course of this school year commencing September 2025. Feedback from previous years has been very good and we are delighted that Paudie has agreed to work with us again this year. Each meeting will take place in Laois Education Support Centre. Lunch and refreshments will be provided on the day. Hopefully some principals will be able to use their admin days for this. We are not able to facilitate enough sessions to ensure that everyone can attend on their designated release day, but perhaps you might be able to work around that. The Programme of Support/Clár Tacaíochta will be a participant-led programme that will be responsive to the individual needs of those who attend. Interpreting Psychological Reports for Teachers (P/PP) 7.10.2025A webinar for primary and post-primary teachers examining the educational psychological report and interpreting the language in order to plan to support the needs of the pupil. This course is highly practical and will help make the most of the assessment report giving tips and ideas to implement interventions based on the needs of the pupil. We will also examine the different methods of reporting results and look at how to identify priority learning needs based on the information in the psychologist’s report. Learning outcomes:

Wellbeing in the Classroom; A Moment to Breathe (face-to-face in Laois Education Support Centre) 7.10.25Laois Education Support Centre Wellbeing and self-care class for primary and post-primary teachers Take time out to prioritise your health and wellbeing. Teaching is a busy career, and we are often so busy looking after everyone else that we forget to make ourselves a priority. This class is designed to help you unwind and recharge, giving yourself space to breathe and reboot when you need it the most. Within the class, we will practice breathwork, mindfulness techniques, movement and goal setting to help you build your own self-care routine. Develop awareness around your own energy levels, so that you can give nourish your body and mind when it's most needed. Help your active mind slow down, let go and become more connected to the present moment. Facilitator: Séan Murphy. Seán taught Leaving Cert Higher Maths / Physics, and Applied Maths for 14 years in CBS Ennistymon, Co. Clare. For the last two years, he has also been teaching Leaving Cert Computer Science in the newly amalgamated Ennistymon Community School. He has given regular maths CPD courses for Athlone, Laois, Galway, Sligo, and Clare Education Centres over the last four years. He was also a local facilitator for Clare/Limerick Education Centres in the early years of Project Maths. Séan has a Masters in Electronic Systems (Robotics) from DCU and worked in industry both as an electronic engineer, and a database programmer for a total of 8 years, before changing career to teaching. He also has Nvidia certification on ‘AI – Fundamental of Deep Learning’ from Technological University Dublin. |

Get Started with Computer Science in Your Post-Primary School (face-to-face Laois ESC) 8.10.25Laois Education Support Centre This workshop, hosted by TU Dublin's CSinc Research Centre, will provide post-primary teachers with a whistle-stop tour of everything you need to introduce Computer Science to TY students. From online resources, content overview and pedagogical approaches used by LCCS teachers, we'll guide you through the essentials in rolling out this subject in your secondary school! We'll demonstrate some introductory hands-on coding activities, so that you can build your own confidence as an educator. All attendees will gain access to a free online learning platform, CSLINC, which your students can also use throughout the year to explore Computer Science. Facilitator: Nicola’s Culloty's career journey started as a primary school teacher where she devoted over two decades to nurturing young minds in the classroom. Driven by a passion for mental health and well-being, Nicola returned to the academic world and earned her Master's degree in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy in 2019. She has since completed a Diploma in Traumatology and PTSD and a further Diploma in Coaching. In 2020, she founded Full Circle CBT, an organisation offering online therapeutic support to individuals of all ages. Nicola's expertise extends beyond therapy; she actively conducts training workshops for school communities and organisations, equipping them with essential tools to foster mental wellness in their communities. Nicola has provided training and workshops to many schools, organisations and government agencies over the past number of years. She has worked closely with NALA, Mary Immaculate College of Education, TUSLA, the Institute of Guidance Counsellors, European School Varese, ESCI and many more. ASD Class Teachers' Support Group 9.10.25This Support group is for teachers in ASD classes at both Primary and Post Primary level. The aim of the group is to provide support, share ideas and resources and source and provide evidence based CPD for teachers currently running autism classes. Facilitator: Shaun Greville has returned to school in the Esker Centre, Ballinamere after 5 years secondment to the SESS and latterly NCSE. He fulfilled the roles of Advisor and Assistant National Coordinator for the autism team with a focus on in school support for teachers and both in school and external CPD regarding autism. He is a co author of Autism Good Practice Guidance for Schools. |

ASD Parent Support Group 9.10.25This Support group is for parents of primary and post-primary children with Autism. The aim of the group is to provide support, share ideas and a platform for parents to ask questions. Please note, this webinar is for parents only and will deal with the Theory of ASD from a parenting perspective and not a school perspective. Therefore, we would appreciate if SNA /Teachers did not book a place on this support webinar. This group will meet every 4/6 weeks. She has recently returned to study as a doctoral candidate focussing on strength-based inclusive practice in schools. She has a wealth of professional and personal experience of loving and living and working with people with autism and other additional needs and brings a neuro-psychotherapeutic perspective to her work in the area. |
